I just completed the G.C.E. O Levels! What can I do, where can I go?

Congratulations on completing the first, most important examination milestone in your almost adult life! You spent the last 4 to 5 years preparing for it and now, finally, it is finished. You must be feeling somewhat empty… what do you do now?

POSSIBLE THINGS YOU CAN DO WHILE WAITING FOR THE RESULTS

WORK, PART-TIME!

This is not an option many of you would even need to consider. You don’t need to work! You are well-supported by your parents. But, I am sure there are some amongst you that aren’t and as a matter of fact, you need to help with family finances, so you work to help out with whatever you can. YOU ARE AMAZING and you should be recognised as such.

Well… even if you are well-supported by your parents, you should try to find some part-time work. You will not only get some money for your efforts, you will also get some WORK EXPERIENCE which may prove to be valuable for you in your next phase of life.

TAKE UP SHORT COURSES

As you wait for your results, you might want to consider taking up some courses which may prepare you for your next move. First, you need to know where you are going!

Junior College

If you want to go to University, going to a Junior College is the most direct and logical option. A Junior College prepares you for the G.C.E. A Levels which is the most accepted qualification for entry into a university anywhere in the world; especially in the English speaking world. So you could consider doing short courses in the subjects areas like MATHEMATCS, the SCIENCES and even getting some introduction to GENERAL PAPER (GP). Many don’t see the importance of GP as it is an H1 subject but think about it, you will need to have strong language and current affairs in order for you to be truly successful in life. GP provides balance against just purely facts and numbers. GP provides exploration of thoughts and ideas with a global outreach.

Polytechnic

The alternative route to the University would be the Polytechnic. It used to be for those who could not get into the Junior College but now, some are choosing this route instead of going to the Junior College even if they could make it. Do you know the reason for this? At the end of your study, you do not only get industry-related skills and knowledge, you will also get a industry-ready qualification which you can use to start to look for work!

Let me tell you a secret… shhh… You did hear this from me! You can transfer credits earned during your Diploma study to related degree programmes with Universities all across the globe! You might even get recognition that will enable you to enrol for a Top-Up degree programme which is one to years in duration thus giving you a huge head start in life. If you wish, you can continue another year or two and complete a Master’s degree!
