Ten reasons why you don’t need an MBA
According to an article in Forbes, here are Ten Reasons You Don’t Need An MBA.
- You won’t make more money.
- The value of an MBA depends greatly upon the rank of the school.
- The debt puts you risk averse at a time you should be trying things out.
- Earning an MBA is a time suck.
- An MBA may not be relevant to the job you truly want.
- The value of an MBA doesn’t last forever.
- You don’t need it for a career pivot.
- Hiring managers may perceive you as overqualified.
- You don’t need an MBA to build a solid professional network.
- The degree has become diluted.
Here are 10 reasons why I think you need to get one!
Reason 1: You can make more money!
You can make more money in a couple of ways. If you would like to stay in the same job, then you will need to show to your bosses the added value of you getting the MBA to the company’s bottom line. Some may argue that you can show this even without getting the MBA. Well, the point of doing the MBA is to gain knowledge you do not have so that you can contribute more to the company and be an asset rather than just another number. The other option is to find new work that pays you for the value potential you bring to the organisation. This usually comes with a pathway to a higher appointment and thus, a higher pay.
Reason 2: Find another way to get into the Club
The perceived value of an MBA is related to the School. I totally agree with this statement. So the question here is, are you studying for an MBA or are you buying into a Club? The fees for some of the more recognised MBAs are so high that I really wonder if you are actually paying for study. No one can argue the names of the Business Schools/ Universities that are displayed on the Diploma means a great deal and can open many doors for you but I am confident that you can get the same knowledge from a lesser known but accredited University with fees which are much lower. So at the end of the day, you need to decide can you pay to get into the Club? I always find that if you look closer, there is always another way in. You just have to look for it.
Reason 3: The MBA can be affordable
Paying for an MBA can be hard and sometimes unnecessary, if you are choosing an MBA that is expensive, of course! There are great value MBA programmes that don’t cost an arm and a leg and will give you a great education as well. You just have to look for them. I know of one that can save you a lot of money!
Reason 4: The MBA can be flexible
Earning an MBA don’t have to time-sucked! We all have work and we know we cannot stop work, especially during this pandemic. If we stop working so that we can study, we may never get another job! So let’s be realistic. What you need is an MBA programme that is Blended or can be completed 100% Online. This flexibility will enable you to still keep your jobs and upgrade yourself at the same time.
Reason 5: Study the MBA because you find it useful and are passionate about Business
If you are studying for an MBA simply for the title.. STOP! Don’t waste your time. You do the MBA if you find the course useful for your work, business and life. You should do a Master’s degree that you are passionate about not because you want the initials behind your name or in your resume.
Reason 6: Knowledge lasts forever, the MBA does not
The value of any degree does not last forever, what lasts is the knowledge you gained from doing it. The MBA will open doors for you but to get an invitation to come in, you need to show that you can hold up a conversation. You need to show you deserve to get in.
Reason 7: Be recognised
No one needs an MBA to be a career pivot, but it helps! Come on, you know it helps!
Reason 8: Don’t fear of being judged as over-qualified, fear that you do not fit
If a hiring manager sees you as over qualified, you should feel flattered! He or She is probably threatened by you! If I am a hiring manager and I am interviewing you, I would see how your knowledge and experiences can benefit the company. The only reason why I would not hire you is because you do not fit the role I need filling.
Reason 9: Gain and Benefit from your networks
You do not need an MBA to form a solid network but hey, birds of a feather, flock together? We need every little help we can get to get us into the group. When you are studying for the MBA, you will be making friends and contacts with people from all over the world. This connection will grow and with it, your presence in the business world.
Reason 10: Tap on the knowledge gained from the MBA and grow
The MBA is becoming diluted? Then we should seriously think about the future of all degrees! There are about 25,000 Universities in the world, each presenting their graduates with undergraduate and graduate degrees, do we need them? The MBA is not just a piece of paper. The MBA provides students with knowledge and business acumen to be successful in the world of business. As the world of becomes more interconnected and complicated, new ways need to be found to do business. The MBA programme can provide the catalyst for business leaders to find new ways and be successful.
